MORNING PLENARY

In conversation with Commissioner Russell Royball, advocate and leader in the anti-hate space, Bamby Salcedo, shares her story around resilience, advocacy, and what she's built to protect the undocumented and trans community. Acknowledging the harsh realities of hate violence our communities are facing, especially the undocumented and trans community, Bamby will share her own journey from her lived experiences to the founding of TransLatin@ Coalition and her support of anti-hate work across the state.

California has been a leader in fighting against hate and safeguarding civil rights. From groundbreaking legislation to statewide reporting infrastructure and support systems, this conversation brings together the leaders behind these efforts to explore how policy and community action work together, what’s at stake in today’s climate, and how we can move forward collectively.

Throughout civil rights movements in California and beyond, joy has fueled resilience and sustained the fight for justice. Featuring live performances by San Francisco Drag Laureate Per Sia and NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner and rapper Ruby Ibarra, this session explores how artists use creative expression as a form of resistance. Through performance and conversation, they show how art can affirm identity, challenge oppression, and create space for belonging and pride.

A session sharing new data, key trends, and evidence-based recommendations to strengthen California’s response to hate, including strategies for prevention, intervention, and community support.

An interactive session offering practical tools to engage across differences with empathy and respect. Participants will learn techniques grounded in nonviolent communication to navigate difficult conversations and build understanding, while exploring the role of cross-community solidarity in responding to hate.

A screening of Birth of a Mind, a short film exploring youth allyship across Black, Asian, and white communities, followed by a discussion on building solidarity across diverse communities.

Hosted by Oakland Creates, participants will explore how messaging and artwork intersect to inspire grassroots activism.

This panel examines the critical role that media, sports, and pop culture play in advancing civil rights, narrative change, and building a shared understanding of a just society. Panelists will examine how culture addresses discrimination and rising hate, the media’s role in telling stories and creating visibility, and how creatives and athletes can use their platform to reach mainstream audiences with a message of unity and shared human values, especially during times of division.

Grassroots organizing, mutual aid, and collective care have always been at the core of social justice movements. This panel brings together organizers, legal advocates, and community builders from across California who play key roles in advancing civil rights and supporting and protecting our communities.
