Civil Rights Resources

California vs Hate is committed to supporting all individuals impacted by all forms of hate and discrimination. The resources below provide information about how California law protects you, and how the California Civil Rights Department may be able to help.

What Is Housing Discrimination?

Under California law, everyone has the right to housing that is free of discrimination. Landlords, property managers, and others cannot treat you unfairly because of characteristics like your race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or immigration status. Housing discrimination can include actions like making it harder for people with specific identities to find a home, live comfortably, or feel safe where they live. The California Civil Rights Department (CRD) works to ensure Californians have an equal chance to find housing and stay housed by investigating, mediating, and prosecuting complaints, as well as conducting education about civil rights.

Examples of actions that could be discriminatory if based on a person’s protected characteristic:

  • Refusing to rent or sell a home

  • Offering unfair terms or conditions

  • Using discriminatory advertisements

  • Limiting access to services or facilities

  • Harassing or intimidating someone

  • Not providing reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities

If you have an individual complaint for discrimination, please learn about the Civil Rights Department’s complaint process and/or how to file a complaint.

Employers cannot treat you unfairly because of characteristics like your race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or ethnicity. Employment discrimination can include actions like refusing to hire you, paying you less than comparable employees, denying you medical and other types leave, or creating a work environment filled with harassment.
