California Health Interview Survey

The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) is a statewide survey conducted with a representative sample that includes more than 20,000 households across the state.

The survey is administered annually by the University of California, Los Angeles Center for Health Policy Research (CHPR). The metrics and analysis presented on this page are collected from AskCHIS, an online data query system that allows individuals to quickly search for health statistics across various demographics at the county, region, and state level.

The population represented in the CHIS hate activity data includes adolescents and adults age 12 and older. Because of the sensitive nature of the data, some survey questions were asked only of the adult sample of individuals age 18 or older.

About the Dashboard

This dashboard is a resource for understanding experiences of hate across the state, including reported hate crimes and other forms of hate. Our goal is to provide direct access to key metrics, raise awareness, and inform efforts to eliminate hate, bias, and discrimination in our communities.

Because these sources reflect different populations, timeframes, and methodologies, we do not recommend comparing across the datasets. Each tab provides distinct information on related but different aspects of hate in California.
